Canyon Falls
10 miles south of L’anse lies a roadside park with pit toilets, hiking trails, and one of the more unique waterfalls in Michigan. The Sturgeon River tumbles over a 10-foot drop into a canyon around a bend before continuing to smaller drops downriver. The hike to the falls is about a mile utilizing a well-maintained trail. I am often amazed by the things that the Upper Peninsula has to offer, but this mini-canyon is truly a stunning testament to the power of water and the raw and rugged beauty of nature. There are many areas along the trail to climb out onto the rocky edges of the river and enjoy the water, which we really enjoyed. We loved the location of this park to break up the drive from the Lower Peninsula to the Keweenaw, stopping to take in a view of the Mackinac Bridge and then continuing on until this roadside park to hike out to the falls. Pop in for a quick hike or stay for a picnic; either way, your trip to Canyon Falls will be one you will not soon forget!
