Gordon Turner Park
Gordon Turner was a reporter for the Cheboygan Tribune for the better part of six decades, starting in 1927 and ending with his death in 1995. In his tenure at the Trib, he covered everything from local politics to high school sports, never once missing a Cheboygan High School home football game. The main park on the lakefront in Cheboygan was named after him in 1979 due to his, at the time, 52 years of journalism pledged to the region. He passed away in 1995, but his name and legacy live on through the park and those who knew him and read his stories. The park features a playground complete with unique region-specific play equipment, soccer fields, beach volleyball courts, a small beach, and access to the Cheboygan Pierhead Light and former Cheboygan Crib Light. The park also features a boardwalk and observation tower for viewing birds and other wildlife. While we did not see any birds worth mentioning while visiting the park either time, we did see a large snapping turtle and a pickerel frog. There is also a view of the Mackinac Bridge rising in the distance that is worth the stop alone. The kids loved playing on the playground, and we enjoyed the scenery while having a treat from Up North Family Bakery in town. Whether you just need a quick pit stop or are looking for a place to spend the afternoon, Gordon Turner Park is a great place to be.
