Mt. Marquette Overlook
We had been to Marquette almost a half-dozen times before finding our way up to the top of Mt. Marquette, and I have to admit I’m a little bummed it took us that long to discover it. Perched on the north side of Mt. Marquette, the overlook offers a panoramic view of Marquette and its splendor from the Ore Dock all the way over to Hogback Mountain.
There was a big burnt patch in the center of the overlook that looked well-used, so I assume it isn’t uncommon to find folks up here at night enjoying the view. Just to the left and right of the main viewing area is rocky but fairly flat, making for a great picnic spot. The parking lot is quite small, but we were the only ones there when we visited. We had just come from Presque Isle, where finding parking was pretty difficult, so we were quite surprised to find the overlook empty.
The road to the mountain is dirt but fairly well maintained, and I would imagine that any car could make it up before snow is on the ground. Parts of the road are very steep, so use caution when climbing the mountain. Behind the parking area lies an elevated clearing that had evidence of being used as a bonfire pit, and beyond that is what I believe may be the highest point on Mt. Marquette.
There is a big rocky point, and when standing upon it, I could not see any higher area within a reasonable distance. Whether it is the top of the mountain or not, I really don’t know, but it sure feels like the top, and that’s all that matters, right?
