Sac Bay County Park
Sac Bay County Park is located on the water on the outskirts of the former village of Sac Bay. The Sac Bay is small and connects to greater Lake Michigan near the entrance to Big Bay De Noc. There isn’t a ton to do on the south portion of the peninsula, but Sac Bay County Park is less than 15 minutes from the historic Fayette Townsite and the small campground nearby, so it’s worth a stop if you’re visiting or camping there.
The park is small, though it has amenities like a bathroom (pit toilets), grills, picnic tables, and a beach for swimming and enjoying the water. There’s a small playground, too, which isn’t new but will keep kids who aren’t interested in the water busy for a while. There isn’t much parking at Sac Bay County Park; however, it isn’t the most popular park as it’s further south on the peninsula than most people go. Still, it’s a solid place to step out of the car, have a picnic, or dip your feet in the water.
The view of the bay is incredible, and you have access to a lot of beach to walk here. So long as you stay within Lake Michigan’s high water line, you can walk east (towards Fairport) past the homes that dot the waterfront; however, the path westward is much more scenic and secluded. If you go east, you’ll eventually run into a tiny artificial harbor, which is an odd sight. Depending on the water level, the shoreline may be sandy or rocky, but most of the time, it’s rocky.
When we visited Sac Bay County Park, we were the only ones there. This might not be the case during peak summer tourism season, but because of how secluded the park is and how far you can walk under the high water line, you can always find something to do at this park!
