Schoolcraft Township Park

Schoolcraft Township Park is a small beachfront park just south of the Grand Traverse Bay Harbor Boat Launch at the mouth of the Traverse River. It features a long, sandy beach, a small playground, picnic tables, and grills for cooking. The Deer River runs through the park, offering fishing opportunities.

The parking area is large, and though it’s quiet most of the year, it can get busy in the summer. The drive from or to the communities on Torch Lake is quite nice, passing next to Rice Lake and through the wilderness for some time. The view of the Superior Grand Traverse Bay is phenomenal from the sandy beach at the park.

Further north, most of the beaches are almost entirely stamp sands from the Mohawk Mining Company Stamp Mill in Gay, but everything south of the Traverse River Mouth and Breakwater is much cleaner-looking.

Some of the calmest parks in the Keweenaw Peninsula are on the eastern shore. You’ll find less people here and quieter water. There are fewer rocks for hunting, too, but the peacefulness of it all is a nice touch. Brunette Park, Bete Gris Roadside Park and Beach, and Tobacco River Falls and Park are worth checking out if you’re into that sort of thing!

Schoolcraft Township Park is an excellent place to dip your feet in the bay, take a break from your adventures around the Keweenaw Peninsula, or have a bite to eat with friends and family. There’s a small campground just south of here, which is a nice amenity, too!
