Stafford County Park

One of my favorite camping memories of my adult life is spending a few nights at the rustic campsites of Stafford County Park in Port Hope, Michigan. Before our first trip, I had never really been to the Thumb before, and after visiting, I wish I had gone sooner. We camped at Stafford for one of the first weeks it was reopened from the COVID pandemic, so it was not very crowded. The rustic sites are on a little peninsula that juts out into Lake Huron, and for most of our stay, we had the entire peninsula to ourselves. We had the spot furthest towards the lake, and it felt like we had an oasis all to ourselves. We faced our tents towards the lake and were greeted each morning with one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen. There was a sandy beach at the park, but the peninsula was rocky. The town of Port Hope did not have much to offer due to the timing of the pandemic; however, we’ve been back to visit since and thoroughly explored it. Stafford County Park is a great place to camp with kids and a great jumping-off point to adventure around the rest of Michigan’s Thumb. While you’re there, get breakfast at Buck’s!
