Tobacco River Falls & Park
Tobacco River Falls is a small park located on the shores of Lake Superior at the mouth of the Tobacco River. In addition to a recreation area with picnic tables, bathrooms, and lakefront views, Tobacco River Falls is just across the road from the park.
The falls aren’t the most majestic on the Keweenaw Peninsula; however, they’re worth a stop if you’re in the area. You can view the falls by carefully walking under the bridge or by crossing the street and walking down a short path to the falls.
The park isn’t very large, but it’s a pretty place to stop. Unlike Brunette Park down the road, you can see homes, and traffic is a bit heavier here. Compared to other parts of the Keweenaw Peninsula, traffic is tame. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic, and you can see across the bay to the mainland on a clear day.
In the springtime, Hognose Sucker Fish climb Tobacco River Falls to spawn. If you time your visit, you can see thousands of fish trying to slide, shimmy, and dance their way up the river. It’s easy to sit and watch for ages, rooting for the different fish that give it their all for a chance to make it up another section. The further you go upriver, the fewer fish you’ll see, but they’ll typically be larger in size.
At the time of writing, the Tobacco River is a Type 4 Trout Stream between the mouth and where it forks with the Black Brook Creek. That means it’s open for fishing year-round, but there are some regulations for keeping your catch and for certain types of fish. It’s always best to check the DNR site before casting a line!
Whether you’re looking to cross another waterfall off your list, are looking for a park to stretch your legs, or are interested in some fishing, Tobacco River Falls & Park are worth a stop.
