Black Rocks (Presque Isle)
On the far side of Presque Isle sits a large rocky outcropping extending from the mainland out into Lake Superior known as black rocks. Upon our first visit to Presque Isle, we experienced the back rocks in the middle of a blizzard, and when we visited again a few months later, we jumped off the cliffs into the lake. I had never been cliff jumping before but have to admit it was one of the most fun and exhilarating things I have done in quite some time. We saw children around 5 years old all the way up to grandparents over 60 jump off the crowded rocks into the lake, with dozens of concerned and convincing parents watching with a keen eye. Although the water in Lake Superior is never warm, on a really hot day, it was quite refreshing, and I stayed in the water for quite a while between jumps. Climbing out of the water can be difficult if, like me, you are not that flexible or strong due to injuries, but it was manageable. Worst comes to worst; you can swim to the shoreline for an easy escape. I would highly recommend a pair of rigid water shoes with a grip on the bottom of them to protect your feet and help you when climbing out of the water. Whether you are coming to wade in the water at the beach, have a picnic by the water, or do a backflip off the rocks, black rocks on Presque Isle is a must-visit location for any trip to Marquette.
