Astor Shipwreck Park

We were referred to Astor Shipwreck Park by a local shop owner in Copper Harbor because we asked what parks other than Hunter’s Point we could check out to hunt for rocks. Although we did not find any agates, the park was quite beautiful. Situated right across the street from Fort Wilkins State Park, the rocky beach is a great place to take a load off, hunt for rocks, and view the Copper Harbor Lighthouse. The oldest known shipwreck on Lake Superior, the John Jacob Astor, is scattered around the bay. In the summer, divers can dive to see its remains. The Garden Brook is born out of Lake Fanny Hooe, runs under US-41, turns into small rapids near the parking lot for Astor Shipwreck Park, and slowly winds into the belly of Copper Harbor. We saw a few fishermen slowly reeling in spoons while at the park, assumingly for trout or salmon. Astor Shipwreck Park is a little off the beaten path of the main drag of Copper Harbor, but worth the visit!
