Au Sable Light Station
The Au Sable Light Station was built in 1874 and remains in use today, guarding Au Sable Point on the far east end of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It was built to warn ship-goers about a shallow ridge that extends nearly a mile out into the big lake from the shoreline. The lighthouse was automated in the 1950s and now operates by solar power. We hiked to the Au Sable Light in the evening, which was quite magnificent, but a little creepy, too. We sat in the cool night air and watched the light shimmer out onto the lake as waves crashed onto the cliffs below for about an hour before heading back to our campsite. I hope to get back to the lighthouse during the day sometime as I am very fond of the memories from that evening. To access the light station, park at the Hurricane River Campground and head east on the North Country Trail for about a mile and a half.
