Hurricane River Campground

Hurricane River is the campground furthest east in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We camped here for just one night in the late fall, but we are already planning to return to camp here again. The campground sits right on Lake Superior, and we were able to see and hear it from our site. The evening we camped at Hurricane River, we decided to take the hike out to Au Sable Light Station via the North Country Trail, which runs right through the campground. It’s just under a mile and a half to get to the lighthouse, which was quite eerie at night. We sat and watched the light flicker as the waves crashed into the rocky cliffs to the north in the chilly November air. On the way back, we brought out a UV light we had brought to look for Yooperlites. We found a few, which was really neat to see, but didn’t bring them with us as you cannot take rocks from National Lakeshores. In the morning, we walked the shore of Lake Superior as the sun rose, which was incredible. The pink sky is not something I will soon forget!
