Harlow Lake Big Rock Picnic Area

There’s a large rock on the shores of Harlow Lake near where Harlow Creek flows out from the lake that’s perfect for a picnic, unwinding after a long day, or hanging out with friends. Depending on the water level at the lake, there’s more or less rock here, but there’s almost always space for anyone who wants to enjoy everything the giant boulder has to offer.

There’s a small parking area here to service the various trails in the area, but there isn’t room for more than a handful of cars, so drive with a friend if you can instead of driving separately. You can hike to Hogback Mountain from here, and there are various other trails dotting the landscape here. Marquette is known for its hiking, and this is a stellar jumping-off point for accessing them. Plus, when you finish your journey, you can unwind with a drink and a snack on the big rock.

If you’re already here, it’s worth heading to the Top of the World Lookout, as it’s a short drive inland from Harlow Lake. The lake itself has good fishing, with some large pike, some bluegill, and the occasional perch. During the spawn, steelhead run up Harlow Creek, through the lake, and back into the creek’s upper reaches. If you’re going to hang out on the rock for a while, it’s worth bringing your fishing pole. You never know what you might catch!
