Whitefish Falls

After what I read and saw online, I didn’t expect much from Whitefish Falls. However, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Located less than a ten-minute drive from Trenary, Whitefish Falls is a pleasant stop on the road between US-2 and Marquette.

The waterfalls are accessible via a small section of Michigan State Forest that offers a few campsites. Nobody was set up here when I visited, but there were a few cars from people checking out the small waterfalls.

If I had to compare Whitefish Falls to another in Michigan, I’d likely say it’s a more rugged and slightly taller Oqueoc Falls, lower Michigan’s most popular waterfall. There are multiple drops, including one that’s larger than the rest. The trail out to the falls is well-trodden; however, as it was early spring, it was overgrown when I visited.

On my visit, an older gentleman sat by the falls for his birthday. He was fishing and very happy to chat about his experiences fishing there. He said he had caught rainbows here before but usually hooked into brook trout and the occasional brown.

After photographing the falls, I returned to the car to grab my fishing pole. After a few casts with a black and yellow body Panther Martin, I caught a little brook trout and was satisfied with my trip. I put my new friend back into the water, packed up, and went on my way.

Depending on what time of year you visit, there will be more or less water in the river. When there’s less water, the falls are less triumphant, but you can walk on the riverbed, which is unique.

Though not the most unique waterfall in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Whitefish Falls is worth the stop if you’re looking for a place to stretch your legs or hook into a trout on your birthday.
