Maheras-Gentry Park
On your drive into Maheras-Gentry Park, you see just about everything. An abandoned school, a canal system, boarded-up houses, ugly new condos, colonial-style houses, and mansions of yesteryear. Once you arrive in the park, you’re greeted by acres of green space that are used for soccer and baseball when the weather allows. On your right are the basketball courts, and sprawling throughout the park are biking and walking paths. A new playscape is just past the start of the parking area, and off to the side is a pavilion where it isn’t uncommon to find barbecues conditioning the summer air with the smell of ribs, burgers, and brats. The park itself is over 50 acres, butting up to the Detroit River with a fishing pond that flows in from the river, creating a small island that you can explore. If you meander out onto the rocks of the island, you get a beautiful view of the Detroit River, Belle Isle, and the city skyline peaking out in the distance. It’s a favorite of Kira’s, and we have spent many nights enjoying the view on those rocks.
