Power House Falls

When I first saw Power House Falls online, I didn’t think much of it. However, it has quickly become one of my most visited waterfalls near L’Anse, and that’s saying something.

The falls get their name from the old, crumbling powerhouse next to the waterfall. This structure has seen better days, and the roof was in a state of near collapse in the Spring of 2024. Still, the old powerhouse makes for a unique waterfall experience, especially if you’re bringing your camera along for the ride. There are more falls a short way down the Falls River, which are worth checking out on foot or with a camera.

The parking area for Power House Falls is just a mile from US-41, making this a quick stop from the main highway. This waterfall isn’t wheelchair accessible but visible from the car, which is a perk.

In addition to the old powerhouse and waterfall, there’s a small park here. There’s green space and places to sit by the river and enjoy the water and noise from the falls.

The Falls River is stocked with trout annually in various locations, spanning from Golf Course Road near the L’Anse Golf Club to the Rivermouth near L’Anse Waterfront Park. When I fished the Falls River under Power House Falls to the bend at the end of the park, I caught brown trout and rainbow trout. Most of them were pretty small, but there were a few keepers. Still, they got put back in the river because they still had some growing to do. There may also be a few creek chubs, but none were large enough to bite my Panther Martin.

Eventually, the old powerhouse will likely be demolished here. That’ll dramatically change the landscape of Power House Falls, but it’ll still be worth a visit for its quaint setting, easy access, and good fishing.

As always, be sure to read up on the DNR (or Tribal) fishing regulations in the area, as they’re subject to change.
