Houghton Skatepark
The Houghton Skatepark was built in 2018 on the riverfront and opened in 2019. It’s easy to get to because you can walk, bike, or skate here from nearly anywhere on the Keweenaw Waterway. The skatepark was built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks, which also built the Armada Skate and Bike Park, Milford Skatepark, Garden City Skatepark, Marquette Skate Plaza, and Smallenburg Skatepark (Holland).
The park is smaller than its sibling in Marquette, sitting at 5,000 square feet, but it has a more diverse set of features, including ramps, rails, quarters, hips, and tables. The park was made possible partly by matching funds provided by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and crowdfunding brought over $50,000 to the project in 2017.
The park is well-maintained and well-used, at least in the warmer months when it isn’t covered in snow. Located next to East Houghton Waterfront Park, the skatepark is centrally located and offers spectacular views of the Keweenaw Waterway, Mont Ripley, and the humble beginnings of the Keweenaw Peninsula’s Copper Island.
When things warm up, this is a popular place to skate, hang out, and enjoy Michigan’s stunning summer weather.
